Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special was a series of two concerts that took place on September 7, 2001 and September 10, 2001. In late November 2001, the CBS television network aired the concerts as a two-hour special in honor of Michael Jackson’s thirtieth year as a solo entertainer (his first solo single, “Got to Be There”, was recorded in 1971). The show was edited from footage of two separate concerts Michael had orchestrated in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on September 7 and September 10 of 2001. The shows sold out in five hours. Ticket prices were pop’s most expensive ever; the best seats cost 00 and included a dinner with Michael Jackson and a signed poster. Jackson reportedly earned .5 million for each of the two concerts, which is over 0000 per minute. The concerts are mentioned in the VH1 biopic Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story, which notes that the last of the two concerts wrapped up just hours before two hijacked jet planes crashed into the Twin Towers of Lower Manhattan’s World Trade Center (see September 11 attacks). This is part one of a five part video chronicling the 50th Anniversary Gala of B’nai Israel Synagogue, and the guest of Honor longtime Rabbi Israel Bornstein. Beginning the video is outside the shul as the guests enjoy appetizers and prepare to go inside for the dinner and presentation. Inside, there are brief looks at those and the Orchid Room before the guest come inside, then Amy Brooke introduces the then current Rabbi Joseph Friedman as he leads the congregants in the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Hatikvah” the Israeli national anthem. Afterward Amy Brooke (co-chair) introduces the program and makes some brief remarks. Rabbi Friedman then makes the opening remarks. He tells a couple of stories. He is very funny and speaks of his love and respect for Rabbi Bornstein. Part one ends as the camera goes from table to table to allow the guests to wish Rabbi Bornstein best wishes.

Vibrio fischeri The slide show!
There are at least a half dozen or more types of Vibrio bacteria. This is NOT an opportunistic pathogen such as Vibrio vulnifucis, the infamous flesh eater. However, I wouldn’t recommend pouring this on your breakfast cereal either. This little critter actually possesses similar chemical mechanisms for bioluminescence as glow worms, fireflies, and bioluminescent varieties of dinoflagellates. They are most commonly found in symbiotic relationships with marine life such as pinecone fish, and Hawaiian Bobtail squid. In the lab, they seem to prefer 18-20C optimal and can last up to a month before subculturing agar is needed. If broth is used, they’ll go even longer. This is a little nice organism for beginning microbiology students, because the media is so hard to contaminate…and they’re really cool to look at.
